It has been a busy and successful start to the banding season for both the NASUWT Riverside and NASUWT Concert Bands. The trophy shelves are starting to burst off their hinges and there is talk of building an extra shelf.
Both bands are on top form with the NASUWT Riverside Band becoming Championship section North of England champions for the second year running. This was under the steady hand and guidance of Dave Roberts.

Following on from their success at the regionals NASUWT Riverside Band then prepared for Blackpool’s Grand Shield Contest under the baton of both Dave Roberts and Nick Childs. With Nick Childs wielding the baton on the day the band came a credible fifth out of twenty bands and were the highest ranked northern region band.
The NASUWT Concert Band have worked hard to achieve an impressive start to their contest season. The band had a coach trip to their first ever out of area contest which was the Holme Valley Brass Band Contest in Holmfirth. Here the band saw off some stiff competition in the Yorkshire region and came a very credible second out of twelve bands in their section.
The band successfully followed on from this accomplishment with becoming the second section champions this weekend at the very wet Easingwold March and Hymn Contest. The band played through torrential rain during this contest and showed sheer will and determination, coming an overall seventh out of a field of fourteen including many championship and first section bands.
Both bands are now looking forward to a busy summer season. The NASUWT Concert Band will next be competing at the Beamish March and Hymn Contest which will then be followed up by the Picnic in the Park Entertainment Contest.
The NASUWT Riverside Band can next be seen competing at the National Finals at the Albert Hall in London.
