It has been a busy and successful start to the banding season for both the NASUWT Riverside and NASUWT Concert Bands. The trophy shelves are starting to burst off their hinges and there is talk of building an extra shelf.
Both bands are on top form with the NASUWT Riverside Band becoming Championship section North of England champions for the second year running. This was under the steady hand and guidance of Dave Roberts.
NASUWT Riverside band has had a fantastic year and are now having a well deserved break after finishing our final Christmas concert at Ushaw College. The band wish everyone a happy Christmas and best wishes for 2018.
The NASUWT Riverside and Concert Bands combine together each year to march through the streets of Durham on Gala Day. However, this year was extra special as we had the unveiling of two new banners both the NASUWT Durham Association banner and the new Pelton Fell Colliery banner.
This year was a very proud occasion for Pelton Fell, where the band room is located, as the village had commissioned a new banner. The bands were very honoured and privileged to take the new banner into Durham and have the banner blessed in Durham Cathedral . This is probably the first time since 1964, when the pit closed, that Pelton Fell has paraded its banner.
The band has just received a new music commission funded by the Northern Region Brass Band Trust. The music has been written by the young talented composer Ben Hollings and is titled Remembrance 'for the fallen'. Ben has written the piece for the band to play on Remembrance Sunday and for the band's future concert programmes.
